Dance and Self-Image
LPD celebrates all bodies.
Through movement, dancers develop a deeper connection with their bodies, learning to appreciate their strengths and embrace their uniqueness. As they become more attuned to their physicality, they cultivate a positive self-image that extends beyond the dance studio.
Here are three ways LPD employs dance to promote a positive self-image.
LPD Uses Improvisation and Freestyle Movement
LPD incorporates improvisational exercises and freestyle movement into our classes. These activities allow students to explore movement without the constraints of choreography, encouraging them to tap into their emotions and authentic selves. We encourage students to let go of self-consciousness and embrace freedom of movement.
The Mirror is Optional
The dance mirror can be both a tool and a weapon. We teach dancers that the mirror can give us immediate feedback on position, placement and line. We also make the use of mirrors in class optional.
We believe that learning to “feel” position, placement and line rather than “see it” leads to deeper and more reliable technical practice.
Group Choreography
LPD fosters group dance activities where participants collaborate to create choreography together. This develops a sense of teamwork, support, and camaraderie, which can boost self-esteem and self-image. Working together towards a common goal and receiving positive feedback from peers can enhance feelings of accomplishment and self-worth.
