  • Goals:

The goal of a recital is twofold. A year-end recital celebrates a year of hard work and gives dancers the opportunity to demonstrate how they have grown and developed. A recital is also an opportunity to learn about professionalism, production, and performance.

The goal for Wee Dancers is to offer a joyous stress-free introduction to performance.

As dancers age, the goal is to prepare them for future performance opportunities and offer them a solid background in performance and stage etiquette.

Dancers are expected to maintain excellent attendance. Dancers are required at staging and dress rehearsals.

    Costumes:

Please see the sections below that describe everything you need to know about costumes, undergarments, tights, shoes, makeup, and hair.

    Traditions:

Dancers typically receive flowers at the end of a recital. This tradition was popularized in the 1820s. The aristocracy would take the flowers from their hair and jackets and toss them on stage after performances. Since then, audiences often gift flowers to performers after a show. This is not mandatory, but many folks take part in the tradition.

Pre-order your bouquets and your flowers will be waiting for you at the theatre.

    Rules:

All dancers must attend staging and dress rehearsal in order to perform. This is a safety issue.

Parents are not permitted in dressing rooms, backstage, or at dress rehearsal. This is a safety and privacy issue.

Parents may volunteer to help supervise dancers in their dressing room during dress rehearsal and performance.

Water is encouraged. Simple non-messy snacks are permitted. No popcorn or chocolate pudding, please.

Costumes for dancers aged 7+ must remain at the theatre.

About the Recital

A year-end recital celebrates a year of hard work and allows dancers to demonstrate how they have grown and developed. A recital is also an opportunity to learn about professionalism, production, and performance.

The goal for Wee Dancers is to offer a joyous stress-free introduction to performance.

As dancers age, the goal is to prepare them for future performance opportunities and offer them a solid background in performance and stage etiquette.

Where possible dancers should keep excellent attendance in the weeks leading up to the recital. The recital is a group effort and everyone has a part to play in creating a strong performance.

LPD has invested in additional rental time at the theatre to ensure dancer safety and confidence. These rehearsals are mandatory.

Theatre Rules

Parents are not permitted “backstage” during the dress rehearsal or show. We will have excellent backstage supervisors to greet the children as they arrive and help them set up their things. If you would like to volunteer to help backstage you are more than welcome.

Staging Rehearsal and Dress Rehearsal are mandatory, for the safety of all dancers.

Water is encouraged. Simple non-messy snacks are permitted. No popcorn or chocolate pudding, please.

Costumes for dancers Level 2+ must remain at the theatre.

Please refrain from taking videos and photos during the performance.

Extra Rehearsals

Starting 4 weeks before the recital we will hold show runs from 6:00-7:30pm so that dancers can build stamina and rehearse their costume changes. These rehearsals are for students Level 1 + and are optional, except Saturday, May 10th which is mandatory for all students.

  Costumes

Costume rental is already included in your class fees, so there’s no extra cost to worry about. We measure the dancers for their costumes in January and February, and they get to try them on in April and May to ensure everything fits perfectly.

Dancers are responsible for their own undergarments, tights, and shoes.

A Note About Undergarments

For our Wee Dance, Combo Class, and Level 1 dancers, we provide a base layer so they can change comfortably at home. This base layer will be handed out after the staging rehearsal, and we ask that it be returned to the studio at your next class after the recital.

Students Level 2+ will
require a “nude” layer of tights and undergarments. This layer is for modesty and dancer comfort during costume changes. This may be different for each individual. This layer could include a combination of nude bodysuit, nude tights, nude underwear, nude dance-belt, nude bra, and/or nude body tights.

Dancers Level 3+ are required to have a black base layer including a black tank leotard, or a black tank top, and black shorts.

Costumes Will Remain at the Theatre (except for Wee Dancers, 5-7 Combo Class, and Level 1). If for some reason a dancer needs to dress at home, please reach out so that we can make arrangements.

Shoes & Tights

*Please note “ballet tights” and “ballet shoes” refer to either pink tights and shoes or skin tone tights and shoes. The combination of tights and shoes should be monochromatic: either the traditional pink or shoes and tights that better represent a dancer’s skin tone.

Makeup

Please note that LPD’s standard make-up is a neutral eye with a black liner and a berry lip.

A berry is preferred over a red lip (even though red is Miss Lynn’s personal fav) because it is universally flattering and complements all costume colours.

We use makeup because the lights used on stage and in film erase facial features. Using makeup helps restore those features and creates a unified look.

If you are sensitive to eyeliner, wet an angled brush and dip it in your eyeshadow. You can create a thin line without using a pencil or liquid liner.

 Hair

LPD’s go-to style is a centre-part low bun. It is timeless and works across dance styles, hair lengths, and textures.

Dancers with long hair are asked to wear a centre-part low bun. If this is not possible, please consult with your teacher for a similar option.

Dancers with short hair are asked to consult with their teacher.

Wee dancers are asked to wear hair in any style of bun.

Reminders

LPD aims to ensure a stress-free, fun, and professionally produced performance experience for dancers and their families. We couldn’t be more delighted to share how hard everyone has worked and how much they have grown this year.

Rehearsals

Where possible dancers should keep excellent attendance in the weeks leading up to the recital. The recital is a group effort and everyone has a part to play in creating a strong performance.

LPD has invested in additional rental time at the theatre to ensure dancer safety and confidence. These rehearsals are mandatory.

Suit Up

I ask that all students “suit up” instead of wearing sweats and dance clothes on show night. This simply means that students arrive at the theatre in their costumes or in “nice” attire. It lends etiquette and formality to the occasion and results in a better performance. There’s no need to purchase anything new!

Traditions

Dancers typically receive flowers at the end of a recital. This tradition was popularized in the 1820s. The aristocracy would take the flowers from their hair and jackets and toss them on stage after performances. Since then, audiences often gift flowers to performers after a show. This is not mandatory, but many folks take part in the tradition.

Backstage

Parents are not permitted “backstage” during the dress rehearsal, or show. I will have excellent backstage supervisors to greet the children as they arrive and help them set up their things. If you would like to volunteer to help backstage you are more than welcome.

Hold the Flash

There is no flash photography permitted in the theatre as it is a safety hazard for the dancers and a distraction to your fellow audience members. A professional photographer has been hired to document the recital and pictures will be available for purchase. I also encourage the audience to put their phones away so that everyone can enjoy the live performance experience.

Recital Organization

Please label all dance shoes and personal items and bring a laundry, or ordinary basket with you to store items in. This ensures that costumes and personal items are contained and organized. If you have a quick change we recommend bringing two baskets, one for your dressing room and one for the quick change area.
