3 Ways to Improve Your Dancing Today!

Jazmin Castro, LPD, 2023

Everyone’s dance journey is unique. As you continue to develop your technique and explore your artistry it is best to “keep your eyes on your own paper”. Do not compare yourself to others. The best starting place is judgment-free.

Practice Technique

Concentrate on and mindfully practice fundamental techniques such as pliés, tendus, réleves, kicks, and simple jumps. Focusing on perfecting these basic movements and making them intrinsic will significantly enhance overall performance. It will also build capacity for more complex techniques and steps.

Stretch and Strengthen

Flexibility and strength are crucial for executing movements with precision and power. Include exercises that target key muscle groups used in dance, such as the core, glutes, legs, and ankles.

Watch and Learn

  1. Watch the other dancers in your rehearsals and classes.

  2. Go see live dance.

  3. Take advantage of online resources to watch performances by professional dancers that you might not have an opportunity to engage with otherwise.

Observing others can provide inspiration, insight into different styles, and valuable tips on technique and expression.

Notice their movements, musicality, and stage presence. Is there anything that you might like to incorporate into your practice?
