Why Do We Do Full Show Runs Before the Recital?

We always build in time for full show runs before recital day. If you're wondering why we dedicate time to this process, here are some of the most common questions we get—along with the reasons behind this important rehearsal step.

What is a full show run?

A full show run (or run-through) is when we rehearse all the recital pieces in order, just as they will appear on stage. Dancers practice their entrances, exits, costume changes, and transitions, simulating the real recital experience.

Why is a full show run important?

Full show runs help dancers feel prepared, confident, and comfortable before stepping on stage in front of an audience. They allow us to fine-tune spacing, timing, and performance quality while reducing pre-show nerves.

How does it help with stage presence?

Running the entire show allows dancers to get a feel for performing one piece after another, maintaining energy, focus, and stamina throughout. It also encourages dancers to think about their presence on stage beyond just the steps—facial expressions, musicality, and transitions all come into play.

What about younger dancers? Won’t they get tired?

We structure rehearsals with age-appropriate pacing to ensure younger dancers feel confident and excited for recital day! Before the big performance, they participate in one full in-studio show run, allowing them to experience the flow of a recital in a familiar environment. Additionally, in the weeks leading up to the show, they get the chance to practice their routine in front of other classes during regular class time. This gradual exposure helps build confidence while keeping the process fun and stress-free. Our goal is to familiarize them with the recital experience without overwhelming them, so when they step on stage, they feel prepared and ready to shine!

Doesn’t extra practice make things too repetitive?

Repetition is one of the best ways to build confidence and consistency! Each run-through gives dancers a chance to refine their performance, so by recital day, they can focus on enjoying the moment instead of worrying about what comes next.

How does a show run help with backstage organization?

Recitals are a team effort! Full runs allow us to test transitions, quick changes, and backstage cues so that everything flows smoothly. It also helps our backstage team (assistants, volunteers, and staff) practice their roles, making recital day stress-free for everyone.

What should dancers do to prepare for a full show run?

  • Treat it like the real thing! Wear appropriate dancewear, bring all necessary shoes, and have water on hand.

  • Use each run-through to focus on a different aspect—one time might be for spacing, another for performance quality.

  • Most importantly, have fun and enjoy the process!

What’s the biggest benefit of doing full show runs?

Confidence. When recital day comes, dancers already know exactly what to expect. They've done the work, they've practiced in a real-time setting, and they know they can do it. This takes away so much performance anxiety and allows dancers to shine on stage!

Show runs begin April 12!
