The Importance of a Nude Layer: Safety, Modesty, and Inclusivity Backstage
We strive to create a supportive, professional, and safe environment for all our dancers, both on stage and behind the scenes. One key aspect of this is the mandatory rule that every dancer Level 2+ has a nude base layer to wear under their costumes. This layer could include a combination of nude bodysuit, nude tights, nude underwear, nude dance-belt, nude bra, and/or nude body tights.
Backstage is often a shared space, bustling with performers, costume changes, and the excitement of a live show. While we do our best to maintain privacy, the realities of quick changes and communal dressing areas mean that modesty and comfort can sometimes be a challenge. Nude layers provide an essential barrier, allowing dancers to change quickly and confidently while feeling secure and protected.
Historically, dancers were often not even permitted to wear undergarments beneath their costumes and were expected to change in group settings, with little regard for personal boundaries. At LPD, we’re grateful to be part of a dance community that recognizes the need for change and prioritizes the well-being of all. By embracing nude layers, we honor each dancer’s right to feel comfortable and respected in all aspects of their performance experience.
Beyond modesty, nude layers also protect the boundaries of everyone sharing the backstage space. Backstage areas are busy, with staff, volunteers, and even other dancers occasionally passing through quickly. Nude layers ensure that those walking by are not unintentionally exposed to a dancer in the middle of a costume change, maintaining a respectful and professional atmosphere for everyone involved.
We encourage all families to invest in high-quality nude tights, bodysuits, or undergarments that match your dancer’s skin tone. This small addition to their recital wardrobe makes a big difference in creating a positive, inclusive, and professional backstage environment.
Thank you for supporting these practices and helping us build a community of creativity, confidence, and kindness.
